Staff Layout Engineer
The role requires both technical depth and execution leadership, with accountability for layout quality, schedule visibility, and project delivery readiness.
The Staff AMS Layout Engineer / AMS Layout Lead is responsible for the execution, coordination, and technical leadership of analog and mixed-signal layout activities. The role requires strong hands-on layout capability while also serving as the technical lead and point of contact for assigned layout projects. The position is accountable for delivering high-quality AMS layout work, guiding layout engineers, coordinating project tasks, tracking progress and risks, and supporting layout closure from floorplanning through physical verification and tapeout preparation.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform hands-on analog and mixed-signal IC layout implementation.
• Execute layout floorplanning, device placement, routing, shielding, matching, isolation, and parasitic-aware optimization.
• Implement layout techniques for precision analog and mixed-signal circuits, including common-centroid layout, symmetry, guard rings, substrate isolation, sensitive signal routing, and power/ground planning.
• Work closely with circuit designers to understand design intent, critical nets, matching requirements, layout constraints, and performance sensitivities.
• Support layout verification and closure, including DRC, LVS, ERC, antenna, density, and PEX-related checks.
• Support ECO implementation, layout reviews, integration, documentation, handoff, and tapeout preparation.
Technical Leadership
• Lead and guide layout engineers assigned to the project.
• Assign and coordinate layout tasks based on project priorities, complexity, schedule, and engineer capability.
• Review layout work for quality, completeness, consistency, and adherence to project requirements.
• Mentor junior and intermediate layout engineers on AMS layout techniques, verification debug, and layout best practices.
• Promote proper layout discipline, documentation, version control, and handoff practices.
Project Coordination and POC Responsibilities
• Serve as the primary AMS layout point of contact for assigned projects.
• Coordinate with design, CAD/EDA, verification, physical implementation, project management, and client teams as required.
• Track layout progress, milestones, dependencies, risks, blockers, and deliverables.
• Provide clear project updates, including status, issues, schedule impact, and recovery actions.
• Identify and escalate technical or schedule risks in a timely manner.
• Ensure that layout deliverables are completed according to agreed quality, timeline, and project requirements.
Key Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in analog or mixed-signal IC layout.
• Strong hands-on experience in AMS layout implementation and physical verification closure.
• Experience leading or coordinating layout activities within a project team.
• Solid understanding of analog and mixed-signal layout fundamentals, including:
o Device matching and symmetry
o Common-centroid layout techniques
o Guard rings and substrate isolation
o Parasitic-aware routing
o Noise-sensitive signal routing
o Power and ground planning
o Latch-up prevention
o Mixed-signal boundary considerations
• Experience with DRC, LVS, ERC, antenna, density, and PEX debug and closure.
• Ability to interface effectively with circuit designers, technical leads, project stakeholders, and clients.
• Strong ownership, accountability, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to lead project execution while remaining hands-on as an individual contributor.
